Oz the Great and Powerful Review
By: Alissa Casey
I, being a fan of fantasy movies and of James Franco, had semi-high hopes for the ‘pre-quell’ to the 1950s classic; but was sorely disappointed after seeing it last weekend. With poor visual effects and extreme over-acting, there is little redeeming value to be salvaged from this smoldering heap of cinematic refuse; other than James Franco’s captivating smile. Now this could be a harsh interpretation considering I wasn’t even a fan of the original Wizard of Oz. Some might enjoy the ‘heart warming’ scenes of friendship and forgiveness, or find the story line intriguing and if you like a movie, in the end that’s all that counts.
The story line in essence is a Kansas conman named Oscar gets hurled into the mystical land of Oz. There he meets 3 witches and must destroy the Wicked Witch in order to save the people of Oz and become the great and powerful wizard.
The entire landscape and ¾ s of the characters was computer simulated, and thus led to Franco having to perform entire scenes while conversing with only himself. This led to over acting and an inability to emotionally attach to any of the characters; leaving you with an empty feeling and a disappointment in modern cinematography. However, it properly sets up the plot for The Wizard of Oz, which is an important aspect in a pre-quel.
So even though I’m not the biggest fan of Oz, I would recommend you to watch the movie and form your own opinion.
